During the Summer holiday period, we are taking a look at the last book in the Old Testament. Malachi is a name which simply means “my messenger”.

The Iraelites had by now returned from exile, their Temple had been rebuilt and Jerusalem restored. When, however, Nehemiah returned from working for the Persian King, he discovered to his dismay that the tithes were ignored, the Sabbath was broken, the people had intermarried, and the priests had become corrupt. The people were grumbling against God.

Malachi, therefore, writes to correct these abuses, and asks a series of difficult questions for the grumblers to answer. The questions prove particularly relevant to us today.
